The Prince of Peace Racial Justice Team seeks to lead our congregation’s anti-racism journey to becoming more vocal and active in building awareness and striving for the elimination of systemic racism harming our neighbors because of their skin color, ethnicity, culture, or religion.
This team was organized in early 2020 after Pastor Froehlke brought Lenny Duncan’s book, Dear Church… to POP in fall of 2019. God was setting us up (though nothing could have prepared us) for the national racial reckoning that started with horrific violence followed by exposed inequity, both caused by systemic racism magnified by the other pandemic, COVID-19. Striving to be allies in changing what black indigenous people of color (BIPOC) have always known but which was previously unseen, misunderstood, or denied by most whites in our church and nation is an overwhelming goal. This must be an ongoing journey and there is a place for you.
Emphases have included immigration, criminal justice reform, reparations, recognition of and justice for Indigenous Peoples, education about and acknowledgement of our part in white supremacy, and systemic racism in our denomination, communities, state, and nation.
Activities have included African American and Indigenous speakers, service projects, a reparations collection, a prayer banner remembering Indigenous children in residential schools, book discussions, forums, movies, advocacy letters, trips to Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Pow Wows and a Black History walking tour of Princeton, newsletter articles about cultural holidays and opportunities to learn more and act, speakers from refugee resettlement organizations and a welcoming picnic for refugees living in our county in cooperation with other faith organizations to build awareness of cultures, encourage personal interaction and highlight the need for volunteers.
We maintain a Racial Justice Library and encourage members and friends from the community to make use of our well-curated and growing collection. The library is located to the left of the gathering area as you enter the building (near the coat hooks). There is typically a table display with recent purchases or a particular monthly emphasis. We ask readers to sign out their selections and leave your impressions on the large bookmark in the book. One of the lower shelves has books especially for children.
The team meets virtually on the first Tuesday of the month.
